Beam Me Up!

I figure that Wojo is still in mourning due to the recent passing of James Doohan, aka Scotty, so I thought I might say a few words. While many know of his televison and movie feats, most don’t know that the actor was a hero in true life also. He stormed the beach at Normandy during WW II where he was wounded several times. He had seven children, including one born when he was 80 (now that is brave). Most also don’t know that he was Canadian and not Scottish.

Captain Kirk, Spock, and McCoy may have been the most visible characters on Star Trek, but they never would have made it out of orbit if it wasn’t for their daring, and rather sarcastic, engineer. Each member of the crew of the Enterprise could represent a different aspect of our individual personalities; our daring side, our logical side, our devil’s advocate. Scotty, however, represents someone else in our lives. He is the one who keeps us going during our most stressful times. The one who is “giving you all she’s got”, but keeps trying to give you more. Someone who is always there to Beam us up from whatever hardships we may encounter. Whether this person is a spouse, a parent, a friend, we all have someone who fulfills this role.

Doohan’s final wishes were to have his ashes launched into space. A fitting tribute for a fine actor, I think. But please excuse this schmaltzy thought, but I would hope that he would wish that we might all “Live long and Prosper.” And most of us will as long as we have our Scotties behind us.

I was surprised…
I remember when they announced that he had Alzheimer’s, but I guess it never really hit me that he might be going down hill.

Your assessment of his character, and how it was reflective of how he functioned in life, is very astute. I was a big fan of Scotty’s, especially in episodes where he had chances to shine. The movies did right by him as well.

When Shatner dies, that’s when I think I’ll have a really hard time. Captain Kirk was one of my heroes, and that was before I realized his horrifying singing and gross overacting!
