Live Blogging the Teenage Mayor

After being a blogger (I use that term very loosely) for over two years, I thought it’s high time that I give live blogging a spin.  My snark quotient is not nearly as high as many of my blogging compatriots, but I’m willing to try anything once.

So, that being said, I’ll write about Mayor Ravenstahl’s appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman*.

11:35 - Dave opens the show bitching about summer being over.  I know how he feels.

11:36 - Opening credits:  Anne Heche (sexy but crazy), the Mayor, and The Who.  Wow.

11:38 - The monologue is underway.  Dave’s growing his hair out!  I can’t tell if he’s coloring it, or just swimming a lot.

11:39 - “How about that Pluto?”  Ohhhhh Dave, don’t get me started.

11:44 - Monologue over, Dave mentions Ravenstahl for the first time.  Entire city titters.

11:45 - I didn’t know The Who had a new album out.  If Luke sits in for a set, I’ll be psyched.

11:46 - Next week is Ventriloquist week on the Late Show (September 18th-22nd).  My Comcast DVR just automatically set itself up.

11:53 - In the midst of an unfunny Instant Viewer Poll skit.  True or not, the questions are actually better than WPXI’s Question of the Day.

11:59 - Here comes Luke!   Looking good and youthful (cuz he needs it) with the hair all spiked up!

12:01 - Luke deftly dodges the whole City Council election question on how he became President.  No need to get into the “compromise” bullshit.  He proceeds to launch his re-election campaign.

12:03 - Dave gets serious on Luke, pointedly asking him what makes him qualified to be mayor.  Wisecrack about Roethlisberger follows, which is ironic given Dave’s driving history.

12:04 - The Mayor talks about cleaning up the city.  Will he say “Redd Up?”  Damn it! No!  He continues to give his campaign speech.

12:06 - The mayor gets a tree on behalf of the Late Show.  Maybe he’ll plant it at the new downtown Firstside PNC Park.  Or Fifth and Forbes.

That’s it.  All in all, not a bad appearance.  The Teenager was well composed and didn’t seem too nervous.  As Stretch said, he might have soapboxed a little too much but I’d say we can proud of him.

Hope he got home before curfew.

Little confused who is this mayor? Where is he mayor of? And why was he on David Letterman?

I keep forgetting we’ve got some international readers (well, two)… Luke Ravenstahl succeeded Bob O’Connor, who recently died of a rare form of cancer, as Pittsburgh mayor. Ravenstahl was the City Council President, and is the youngest mayor of any major U.S. city at age 26.

Today’s paper had a quote from Luke saying that the gift of a tree from Dave was NOT expected to make it back on the trip to Pittsburgh. I guess Luke wasn’t impressed. ;?

No one that young should be in charge of a city - I can barely run my own life and I am two years older!!
