Big Wide World - I’m coming
Well its impossible to believe, but I swear true, that I am finally looking at the end of my education. Yes, that’s right I will by the end of this year 2007 be finished my PhD and out in the real world (well as close to the real world as the world scientific academia ever gets). And with the end of student life comes the need for a job.
But where do I get a job?
Before you start panicking that the university education may have been wasted on me, I mean where in the world to I want apply for a job. Unlike many fields, my skills are pretty universal and I am able to work anywhere there are molecular biology science labs. In fact, if you wish to succeed you are encouraged to move to a different lab, at least in a different state. In fact another country is generally recommended, to demonstrate your ability to adapt your skills. So here I am in the Great Southern Land, wondering where in the world I want to go??
This is where you guys come in, I want you to tell me about areas/places that you have loved or hated to give my an idea where I want to go. Because, sure I have to find a job, but there isn’t any point going somewhere I could be miserable, when I could just as easily go somewhere I will love. So the challenge is set people - sell, sell, sell
(Oh yeah - probably better be somewhere that speaks english, as my work is hard enough without adding language barriers!)
I grew up in Arizona and lived there for again for a while after going to school at Pitt. I’m back here now because it isn’t a place where I wanted to stay long term. However, for a few years it would be a great place to hang out and enjoy.
Wimmy if you are out there, I was wondering if you could give me any tips on where is or isn’t a good place to go to work in the UK. TAA!
And thanks to my sole commenter (Rinsem) - I’ll keep Arizona in mind.
I’ve been in Charlotte, NC for 2 years. I really don’t like it here. It is very conservative and money/status conscious. When you meet someone the first time, within 2 minutes they will try to get you to go to their church. Politically very conservative. The city is pretty, though, if you like everything fresh and new. They don’t preserve historical building, tear ‘em down and build something new.
My pleasure Fifa, good luck in where ever you decide to head off to!
