Presque Isle Downs Saves Erie

Presque Isle Downs

Grab your fanny pack and the nearest elderly person for a road trip to Erie tomorrow for the opening of Presque Isle Downs. As with anything sizable built within the confines of Erie County, this project promises to save Erie.

Just read the Economic Impact part of the website:

Local merchants and hoteliers will benefit from the introduction to the racing / gaming facility to the area as well. Patrons can be expected to spend some money elsewhere in the area during their visit, ranging from convenience stores and gas stations to area restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues, such as the Erie Zoo.

Ah, yes. So if you haven’t completely blown your wad on Triple Diamonds, you can take in the Erie Zoo: The place where gorillas would rather die than reside at.

So this is not casino, just a place with slot machines?? Does anyone, including the investors, really think that slots will attract that many people to erie? And i am also a little confused as to why somewhere the size of erie has a zoo, let alone one with gorillas. Is it a special zoo? Dubbo (a city/town of approximately equal size) has a special open plains zoo, designed to allow big animals from the African savanna to have an environment more similar to their own and so the animals in some cases (i am guessing only the vegetarians!) can interact. Erie doesn’t really seem like the place for an exotic animal zoo (most of the animals are not used to the cold climate). Do 2000 slot machines really seem likely to change the fortunes of Erie or the Erie zoo??

Pennsylvania has not legalized table gaming yet, only slot machines. That is why it is only slots. Erie has had a zoo for over one hundred years. It is a city of over 100,000 and at the center of a tri-state region of over 1 million. So, I don’t know what you’re talking about it being the same size as a fucking place called Dubbo. There are three certified zoos in PA (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Erie). All have cold climates in the winter as many places in the U.S. do… the hot and warm climate species are housed inside and adapt to colder temps… that’s what animals do - adapt. By the way, two gorillas older gorillas died while in transit to the Erie Zoo, not while at the zoo itself. Gorillas don’t do all that well on airplanes if you can imagine that.

And no one is counting on this casino/racetrack to “save” Erie. There are slots facilities being constructed around the state to help generate revenue for the state’s ailing economy.

Dubbo…
